In his work Naneci Yurdagül reflects, subtly and ironically, on social, cultural and political situations and their change, which always have traces of his own biography. One focus of his artistic engagement are topics on national and religious identity, migration, social exclusion, cultural appropriation and mistrust. They are constantly picked up and are treated critically, often in relation to current public debates, to intervene in the social discourse.  So for this exhibit the artist requires visitors to put on a burqa to experience the entire exhibit. I am both stimulated and repulsed by this idea; I really don’t know what to think. Thoughts??

…critics often fail to acknowledge that hip-hop is neither sociological commentary nor political criticism, though it may certainly function in these modes through its artists’ lyrics. Hip hop is still fundamentally an art form that traffics in hyperbole, parody, kitsch, dramatic license, double entendres, signification, and other literary and artistic conventions to get its points across. By denying its musical and artistic merit, hip-hop’s critics get to have it both ways: they can deny the legitimate artistic standing of rap while seizing on its pervasive influence as an art form to prove what a terrible affect it has on youth.

The Temple was named for Charlie Parker, who they equated to John the Baptist.[38] The St. John Will-I-Am Coltrane African Orthodox Church, San Francisco, which is fondly known as the “Coltrane church”, is the only African Orthodox Church which incorporates Coltrane’s music and his lyrics as prayers in its liturgy.[39] In order to become affiliated with the AOC, Coltrane was “demoted” from being God to a saint.[38] I had no clue this existed—the things black people do. But seriously, I’d rather pray to Coltrane than White Jesus any day.
